Berchelt-Vargas 2 Set For May 11
Miguel Berchelt’s next WBC super featherweight title defense has been set and it will be against an old foe.
Top Rank Boxing announced that Berchelt will defend his title against Francisco Vargas on May 11 at the Tucson Convention Center. The fight is a rematch of their January 2017 encounter that saw Berchelt win the WBC title by stopping Vargas late in their fight. Berchelt was ahead on two of the three scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
Since that fight, Berchelt made several defenses of his title, owning wins over the likes of Miguel Roman, Maxwell Awuku, Jonathan Victor Barros and Takashi Miura. Vargas won his two fights since losing to Berchelt, defeating Stephen Smith in 2017 and Rod Salka in 2018.
The co-main event of the card is another title rematch, this time for the WBO super bantamweight title. Current champion Emanuel Navarrete will defend his title against Isaac Dogboe. The two fought in December 2018 at Madison Square Garden with Navarrete dominating Dogboe through 12 rounds to capture the WBO title, his first world championship.
Navarrete is the third man to hold the WBO 122-pound title since the start of 2018 with Dogboe and Jessie Magdaleno also having held the title.
