Bernard Hopkins Wants To See Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo

Boxing legend Bernard Hopkins is gushing over the idea of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo.

Canelo is the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Champion. Charlo holds the WBC gold in the middleweight division. Charlo has said that a move up to 168 pounds could be enticing as he knows a big money fight with Canelo could be on the table.

Fight Hype caught up with Hopkins, who said that the one fight he wants to see is Canelo vs. Charlo (via Bad Left Hook).

“There’s one fight I want to see him fight…Jermall Charlo. Let me tell you, nothing else matters to me right now. I wanted that fight before the Golden Boy split, I want that fight now. I want that fight in the next year-and-a-half or earlier. The reason I say year-and-a-half is not because neither guy isn’t ready, fix the politics first. See the politics gotta get on the same page first and then the fight happens.

“So hopefully the politics don’t take too long between both sides and we can see one of those throwback Roberto Duran and [Sugar Ray Leonard].”

Canelo’s recent bout was his 168-pound title victory. He became the first man to defeat Callum Smith in a pro bout and he did so via unanimous decision. Charlo last competed back in September 2020, successfully defending the WBC Middleweight Title against Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Canelo has said that his plan is the unify all the major gold at super-middleweight. Standing in his way are IBF titleholder Caleb Plant and WBO Champion Billy Joe Saunders. First, Canelo is expected to take on mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim in February.
