Bill Haney Angered By Ryan Garcia’s ‘Cheating’

Bill Haney has said Ryan Garcia ‘cheated’ in his victory against Devin Haney.

Bill was in his son’s corner as Garcia dropped him three times on his way to a majority decision victory. Haney retained his WBC Junior Welterweight Title because Garcia was 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound weight. Garcia and Haney made a compromise for the extra weight, as King Ry paid Haney a $1.5 million fine. While Haney rehydrated to around 20 pounds on the night of the fight, Garcia’s weight may have made a difference. He continually hurt Haney with his left hook, showing his power. Looking back, Bill felt they should have acted differently.

“That’s calculated. That’s cheating. Initially getting hit with it … I don’t think [Devin] recovered. Getting caught early was a recipe for disaster. The left hand … we had a plan for it because it’s Ryan’s money punch,” Bill Haney said

There have been calls on Devin to get a new trainer. Bill came under fire for failing to get his son to make any adjustments. Garcia repeatedly hit Haney with the same left hook, including in the first round, which should have been anticipated. That is Garcia’s best weapon, so the lack of a plan raised worries. Haney was winning some of the rounds by using his jab. However, he could not stay out of range with questions about his training set-up. Bill ultimately left the decision for his son to make.

“He’ll come out of that in a good space, and whatever decision he makes, I’m sure it will be the best decision of his life. This is his decision and his decision only,” Bill stated
