Billy Joe Saunders: Callum Smith Has The Tools To Beat Canelo Alvarez

Billy Joe Saunders thinks Callum Smith has what it takes to defeat Canelo Alvarez.

Smith is set to put his WBA (Super) Super-Middleweight Title on the line against Canelo on December 19. The title fight will take place inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Fans will be allowed in attendance at a reduced capacity. Smith has a perfect pro boxing record of 27-0.

Canelo is boxing’s biggest star and regarded as the pound-for-pound best boxer by many. He’ll be the favorite going into his bout with Smith but Saunders, who holds the WBO Super-Middleweight Title, thinks Smith can pull off the win. Here’s what he said during an interview with Matchroom Boxing (via Bad Left Hook).

“If you’re gonna go in there, try to stand in front of him, cover up with a high guard and leave the body open, it’s a no brainer. He’s very good to the body. He’s stopped most of his opponents, including (Callum’s) brother (Liam) to the body, Rocky Fielding to the body.

“I like Callum’s style, I think he’s a good, good fighter. Also I like Canelo. It all depends. Callum has got the tools to beat him and the fundamentals to beat him. Everything’s there. But how he uses them is another thing. If (Smith) goes in there and uses the right game plan, I believe if it’s a fair decision, he could get a points win. If not, I could see a Canelo stoppage.”

Saunders has his own business to attend to. He will put his gold on the line against Martin Murray on December 4.
