Billy Joe Saunders Concerned Over Ring Size For Canelo Fight
Billy Joe Saunders is not thrilled with the size of the ring for his upcoming title fight with Canelo Alvarez.
Saunders is the WBO Super-Middleweight Champion. Canelo holds the WBA, WBC, and The Ring gold. All four titles will be on the line when the two collide on Saturday night, May 8. The action will be held inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Saunders had been adamant about wanting an even playing field. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn was hoping to have one of the three judges reside in the UK. There is another gripe that Saunders has.
The WBO Champion spoke to Behind The Gloves and expressed his belief that the ring for his fight with Canelo is too small (h/t BoxingInsider.com).
“There’s one or two small things now. One of those small things and when I say small is the ring. I’ve left it to my team. I let them sort out all of that rubbish.
“You don’t go in a 70,000 seat stadium with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of feet long and now down to a 16-foot ring or an 18-foot ring or even a 20-foot ring. This magnitude of fight has to be on a fair playing field.”
