Billy Joe Saunders Explains Why Caleb Plant Fight Isn’t Likely
Billy Joe Saunders isn’t counting on ever sharing the ring with Caleb Plant.
Saunders is the WBO Super-Middleweight Champion, while Plant holds the IBF gold. WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring titleholder Canelo Alvarez has expressed his desire to unify all the major gold at 168 pounds. While Canelo isn’t tied down to a long-term deal with any promoter, it’s a different story for Saunders and Plant.
Saunders competes on DAZN thanks to his deal with Matchroom Boxing. Plant is often seen on FOX through his PBC deal. This is why Saunders thinks it would be difficult to share the ring with Plant.
Here’s what Saunders told iFL TV (via BoxingScene.com).
“I think he’s a really good fighter. I actually like him as a fighter, but as for talking about me fighting him…is just a waste of breath ‘cause we’re on different platforms.”
Saunders gave Plant his due but said it simply isn’t easy to make fights happen when two boxers are with different promoters on separate platforms.
“If we can’t make these big fights with everyone on the same DAZN platform, to cross over and try to fight is very difficult to do. But I do think he (Plant) is a good fighter. He’s very skilled well. He’s got a good boxing brain. I think he’s definitely a good fighter. I rate him.”
Plant is scheduled to put his IBF gold on the line against Caleb Truax on January 30. Plant is looking to secure his third successful title defense. He also hopes to keep his perfect pro boxing record intact.
