Billy Joe Saunders’ Fight Purse Against Canelo Alvarez Revealed

Billy Joe Saunders may have lost his WBO gold to Canelo Alvarez but his wallet certainly isn’t hurting.

Saunders went one-on-one with Canelo Alvarez in a highly-anticipated super-middleweight title clash. Going into the fight, Saunders held the WBO Title and he was gunning for Canelo’s WBA, WBC, and The Ring Championships. In the end, Saunders couldn’t make it to the ninth round due to an eye injury.

Mike Coppinger of The Athletic reports that Saunders has walked away with a cool $8 million for his efforts against Canelo.

“Billy Joe Saunders earned $8 million for 168-pound title tilt with Canelo Alvarez. He’s been vocal about longtime friendship with advisor, Daniel Kinahan, who did the deal with Eddie Hearn. With a career-threatening injury, Saunders should be set for life.”

Saunders underwent surgery for a quadripod fracture. The surgery has been described by some as “career-threatening” but Saunders insists he will be back inside the ring at some point. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn doesn’t expect the former WBO titleholder to return to action anytime soon.

Canelo is expected to challenge Caleb Plant for the IBF Title in order to unify all of the major gold at 168 pounds. He’ll need to work something out with PBC, the promoter of Plant, to make that fight happen.
