Bivol Beats Smith To Retain WBA Title
Dmitry Bivol delivered another dominant performance en route to retaining his WBA light heavyweight title against Joe Smith Jr.
In the main event of a boxing card in Verona, New York, Bivol defeated Smith by unanimous decision (119-109, 119-109, 118-110).
The fight was mostly one-sided as Bivol kept outboxing Smith and asserting his will on the New York native. Bivol seemed to be cruising towards an easy win on the scorecards until Smith rocked Bivol with a right hand at the end of the 10th round and was nearly dropped. Bivol recovered and returned the favor at the end of the fight by landing a flurry of punches at Smith to secure the win.

After the fight, Bivol stated that he wanted to try and unify titles with another light heavyweight champion and then maybe later on, drop down in weight to challenge for a super middleweight title.
In the co-main event, Maurice Hooker defended his WBO junior welterweight title with a wide unanimous decision (119-108, 120-107, 118-109) win over Mikkel LesPierre.
LesPierre started fighting aggressive, but was quickly outmatched by the longer Hooker. Hooker scored a knockdown in the ninth round and nearly stopped LesPierre altogether but LesPierre did go the distance against the champion.
Hooker nearly lost the title at the scales the day before of the fight as he weighed-in at 140.5 pounds. Hooker used up all two hours that he was given in order to shed the excess weight in order to keep his title and was ultimately successful. This was Hooker’s second title defense since winning the then-vacant title last year when he defeated Terry Flanagan.
