Blaydes, Volkov Targeted for June Saskatoon Event
An important heavyweight bout with potential title implications has been reportedly set for the UFC’s return to Saskatoon. Based on an initial report by ESPN, Curtis Blaydes will face off against Alexander Volkov.
A contender just waiting to get his title shot, Blaydes (13-2, 1NC) is on a three-fight win streak. He won his last bout in January via TKO against Junior dos Santos. The only two losses of “Razor’s” career have been against Francis Ngannou.
Volkov (31-7) is coming off of a unanimous decision win against former NFL star Greg Hardy back in November. It was a rebound win following a loss to Derrick Lewis at UFC 229 in 2018. That was a bout in which Volkov controlled all aspects until a KO with just 10 seconds left into the fight took him out. He is 7-1 in his last eight fights.
Blaydes has been eyeing a title opportunity, but the UFC appears to be stuck on Stipe Miocic defending his UFC Heavyweight Title against Daniel Cormier. Miocic is currently dealing with an eye injury, with his return expected sometime this summer.
The UFC’s return to Saskatoon will take place on June 20. While not officially announced, it is expected that the SaskTel Centre will be the venue for the event.
