Bob Arum Compares Teofimo Lopez To Floyd Mayweather
Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum thinks Teofimo Lopez has made a splash in boxing not seen since Floyd Mayweather’s pro days.
Lopez has quickly made a name for himself in the world of boxing. Back in December 2019, “The Takeover” stunned fight fans with his IBF Lightweight Title win over Richard Commey. While the win itself wasn’t the shock, it was the fashion in which he won. Lopez scored a second-round TKO finish.
The true stunner came in Lopez’s next fight. Back in October 2020, he took on Vasiliy Lomachenko, who was high on the pound-for-pound list of many experts and fans. Lopez earned the unanimous decision victory to retain his IBF gold and capture the WBA (Super), WBO, The Ring, and WBC (Franchise) Titles.
During an interview with The Sun, Arum made a comparison between Lopez and Mayweather.
“Floyd Mayweather was the last American fighter who made that kind of impact as Teofimo did with the Lomachenko fight and will do in the future. But again, it’s all periodic, before Mayweather, Americans had Oscar De La Hoya, we had Sugar Ray Leonard. Again, boxing is such by its very nature, the talent keeps changing but doesn’t necessarily become diminished.”
Arum went on to discuss the future for Lopez. The Top Rank boss said “The Takeover” could eventually challenge the winner of Josh Taylor vs. Jose Ramirez for the undisputed light-welterweight title.
Lopez is likely to put his gold on the line against George Kambosos next. The bout is going into a purse bid as Top Rank and Lopez haven’t been able to come to terms on a deal for this fight. That means various other promotions, networks, and streaming platforms can place bids for rights to the fight.
