Bob Arum Explains What A Win Over Lopez Would Do For Lomachenko
Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum has chimed in on what he feels a victory for Vasiliy Lomachenko over Teofimo Lopez would do for the Ukrainian star.
This Saturday night, October 17, Lomachenko will collide with Lopez in a title unification bout. Lomachenko holds the WBA (Super), WBC (Franchise), and WBO Lightweight Titles. As for Lopez, he holds the IBF gold. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman considers the winner of this fight to be the undisputed champion as Lomachenko’s “Franchise” title takes precedence over Devin Haney’s WBC Championship for this bout.
During a media call on Zoom, Arum discussed what a win would do for Lomachenko, who has already established himself as an elite boxer (via BoxingScene.com).
“This is a big fight for Loma. He will go down in history as the greatest amateur fighters in the world with a meteoric [rise as a pro]. “We matched him with the best fighters that we can find. He’s always come through.
“Obviously, this fight will continue his legacy if he can be successful.”
Lomachenko confirmed what Arum said about continuing to build his legacy.
“When I came into professional boxing, I always wanted fights with top fighters and world champions. Now, I have [another] top fighter in front of me. I want only to improve who I am and to improve my legacy.”
Lomachenko has amassed a pro boxing record of 14-1. Along the way, he has scored 10 knockout victories. Lopez is undefeated with a record of 15-0 and 12 knockouts to his credit. This will be his first IBF Title defense.
