Bob Arum: I Would Certainly Consider Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko
Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum isn’t opposed to booking Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Haney is the WBC Lightweight Champion. Lomachenko is coming off an upset unanimous decision loss to Teofimo Lopez. With the defeat, Lomachenko lost the WBA (Super), WBO, The Ring, and WBC (Franchise) Lightweight Titles.
Haney is the WBC Lightweight Champion. He’s had two successful title defenses against Alfredo Santiago and Yuriorkis Gamboa. He is unbeaten with a record of 25-0.
Arum, who promotes Lomachenko, says a showdown with Haney isn’t out of the realm of possibility. He also named some other potential opponents for Loma during a chat with the folks at Barbershop Conversations (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“Loma vs Haney? That’s a fight we would certainly consider. That’d be a really good fight. There’s a lot of good fights for Loma… Loma can fight maybe Ryan Garcia. Or, if he wants to go down, maybe Oscar Valdez is a great match for Loma.”
Haney’s last bout took place back in November. He defeated Gamboa in a one-sided affair. “The Dream” cruised to a unanimous decision victory.
Lomachenko is coming off shoulder surgery. He’s hoping to rebound after suffering just the second loss of his pro boxing career.
Haney is expected to take on Jorge Linares next. The two have reportedly agreed to a WBC Title showdown in May. If the title fight comes to fruition, it’ll headline a card on DAZN.
Arum has said that Masayoshi Nakatani is a frontrunner to face Lomachenko next. Whether or not that will ultimately materialize remains to be seen.
