Bob Arum Reveals Why Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez Isn’t On PPV
Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum is speaking out on why Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez will not air on pay-per-view.
Lomachenko vs. Lopez is considered to be the biggest boxing match of 2020. Barring a draw or No Contest, someone will walk out of the MGM Grand Conference Center with the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO Lightweight Titles on October 17. Lomachenko vs. Lopez will air live on the major ESPN network and on FIGHT SPORTS in over 50 countries worldwide.
During a virtual press conference, Arum explained why airing the event on pay-per-view was the direction to go in (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“I just wanna thank ESPN because in these terrible times. When so many millions of fellow Americans are out of work, it, I think, would’ve been unseemly to ask people to spend 70 or 80 bucks to see this great fight on pay-per-view. And ESPN went up to the plate, and stepped up to the plate, and gave us the wherewithal to do this fight. And so people, whatever their economic situation, will be able to watch this fight without any cost.
“We’re gonna have a huge, huge audience. It’s gonna be a real plus for the sport of boxing. Millions of people will be watching this event and will be seeing what boxing is all about, with these two great, great athletes and fighters contesting on October 17th. So, I’m very, very happy – I really am. I’m looking forward to this event, and I know boxing fans all over the world are looking forward to watching this event.”
Many are wondering if Lopez has what it takes to pull off the upset over Lomachenko. He certainly isn’t lacking confidence going into this matchup. Lopez has expressed his belief that Lomachenko has one foot out the door when it comes to the sport of boxing and it’s time for him to take over.
We won’t have to wait long to find out who will get their way.
