Bob Arum Says Teofimo Lopez Will Headline December Event At Madison Square Garden
Top Rank CEO Bob Arum already knows what’s next for Teofimo Lopez.
Arum said he has plans for Lopez to fight in the headliner of a December 10 event at Madison Square Garden in New York. The card will be shown on ESPN following the 2022 Heisman Trophy presentation.
“That’s certainly our plan, to have him come back at Madison Square Garden on Heisman night,” Arum said.
“And then we would load it up with all of the super [prospects] that we’re promoting. We’re blessed like we never have been before with such young up-and-coming talent. You look at our undercards and you have one fighter after another that you would swear is gonna become a world champion.”
The date has also already been put onto BoxRec with an opponent yet to be announced.
Lopez is coming off of a successful debut at junior welterweight against Pedro Campa on August 13. He won by seventh-round technical knockout.
The win was a return from his first pro career loss against George Kambosos Jr in November 2021. Lopez once donned the three lightweight belts, but Kambosos became the new champion with the win.
Those belts have since gone to Devin Haney – who is now the undisputed champion – after challenging Kambosos on June 5.
Lopez moved up to junior welterweight for a new beginning.
“Being at 135 was killing my body,” Lopez said in his post-fight interview.
“I just turned 25, and we want Josh Taylor. We want all these guys. We want (Regis) Prograis. We want (Jose) Zepeda. We want all the belts. That’s really who we want. We want to become a two-time world champion.”
Lopez’s return date is basically set, but an agreement on an opponent and purse are still under negotiation.
