Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum is hinting at two potential barnburners for Teofimo Lopez.
Lopez isn’t exactly chummy with the folks at Top Rank these days. “The Takeover” has vowed never to fight for the promotion again. He has felt slighted by the company’s lack of effort in putting money into his fights. Top Rank was even outbid by Triller and Matchroom Boxing for Lopez’s June 19 fight with George Kambosos. Triller has the rights to that title bout now.
Despite the animosity, Arum insists that he has big things in store for Lopez. He told Boxing Social that he can see the lightweight champion facing off against the winner of Devin Haney vs. Jorge Linares or newly-minted undisputed junior-welterweight champion Josh Taylor in the near future (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“Teofimo is a terrific fighter and he’s had nothing but success. If he wins his fight with [George] Kambosos, and we get through the [undefeated WBO super lightweight mandatory challenger Jack] Catterall fight, it might be a really attractive fight for [Taylor] to fight Teofimo.
“[Lopez] said he won’t have trouble making 135 for a couple of more fights, but he would like to go up to 140 and fight the winner of [Taylor and Catterall]. Realistically, because of Catterall, we’ll give Teofimo another fight at 135, maybe against the Linares and Haney winner. Linares is an excellent fighter. Haney could very well be an excellent fighter, but he’s unproven, We’ll have to see. If Haney can handle Linares, that’ll be a big plus for him.”
