Bob Arum Wants Devin Haney To Prove He’s Worthy Of Teofimo Lopez Fight
Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum says Devin Haney needs a signature win if he wants to collide with Teofimo Lopez.
Haney may be the WBC Lightweight Champion but it’s Lopez who feels he calls all the shots at 135 pounds. Lopez holds the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and WBC (Franchise) Titles. “The Takeover” has plenty of options to choose from for his next opponent but it appears Haney isn’t on that list.
When asked by Fight Hype if there’s any interest in booking Lopez vs. Haney, Arum had the following to say (via BoxingScene.com).
“No, because Haney has to prove himself. It is all bullsh-t. Let him fight somebody that is real then you can match him with Teofimo Lopez. Haney-Teofimo Lopez is not a fight that is going to generate revenue at this point. I don’t know how good he is going to be, how good he is. I am saying he has to prove himself. If Ryan Garcia – again he hasn’t proved himself – but if he beats Campbell then he proves himself.”
Arum went on to say that Haney’s unanimous decision victory over Yuriorkis Gamboa didn’t do much for his stock.
“Let’s see how it develops. Lets see how it goes. I am sure the Haney people are resourceful enough that they will get a decent opponent that will prove that Haney belongs. Beating Gamboa at this point proves nothing.”
Lopez has expressed his desire to move up to 140 pounds to fight the winner of Jose Ramirez vs. Josh Taylor. Lopez’s father agrees with Arum on Haney needing to prove himself against an elite lightweight before sharing the ring with his son.
