Boxer Felix Verdejo Arrested, Charged In Killing Of Pregnant Woman
Felix Verdejo has been charged in the killing of Keishla Marlen Rodriguez Ortiz.
Verdejo surrendered to authorities in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday night, May 2. Rodriguez went missing on Thursday morning. Family and co-workers grew worried when Rodriguez did not show up to work for her 7 a.m. shift.
Authorities launched a weekend-long investigation. A warrant for Verdejo’s arrest was issued and the once-promising boxer surrendered. He has been charged with kidnapping resulting in death, carjacking resulting in death, and the killing of an unborn child.
The body of Rodriguez was found in Laguna San Jose on Saturday afternoon. Verdejo allegedly punched Rodriguez, drugged her, tied her to a cinder block, and dumped her into the lagoon. Furthermore, Verdejo allegedly shot at Rodriguez from Teodoro Moscoso Bridge.
Verdejo was said to have been in a years-long affair with Rodriguez. Reports in Puerto Rico state that Rodriguez showed up at Verdejo’s home with a pregnancy test and informed him that he’s the father before the boxer committed the crimes.
FBI Special Agent Lorenzo Villanova Perez said the following.
“Based on the above facts, the undersigned affiant believes there is probable cause to charge Felix Verdejo Sanchez with violating the following Federal law. Title 18 United States Code, Sections 2119(3) (carjacking resulting in death), 1201 (kidnapping resulting in death), 1841 (intentionally killing unborn child).”
Top Rank Boxing, Verdejo’s promoter, issued the following statement before Verdejo’s arrest.
“Top Rank’s thoughts and prayers are with Keishla Marlen Rodriguez Ortiz’s family and friends, and with all those in mourning. We are deeply disturbed by the news reports, and we will continue to monitor developments in the case as it progresses.”
