Taking notice of criticism against officials at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) has decided to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The association has tasked McLaren Sport Solution with the responsibility to interrogate a total of 36 referees and judges.
Several people from the boxing community began voicing against biased refereeing at the Games after the fight between Michael Conlan and Vladimir Nikitin. The Irishman himself claimed that the decision should not have gone in his Russian counterpart’s favor, since he dominated most of the bout.
After being declared unfit after taking a beating from Conlan, Nikitin was handed a walkover in the next bout. An inquiry was held right after the Games concluded, but all the officials facing probe were later reinstated.
