Boxing Prospect Travell Mazion, 24, Passes Away

An exciting prospect within boxing’s welterweight division has died following a multi-victim car crash in his home area of Austin, Texas. TMZ Sports was the first to report the news that Travell Mazion passed a week (July 24) before celebrating his 25 birthday.

Golden Boy ended up sending a message on social media to honor Mazion (17-0):

“We at Golden Boy are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of @black_magic92. He was a kind, charismatic young man who lit up every room he walked into and brought excitement to fans inside the ring. We send our heartfelt prayers and thoughts to his family. May he R.I.P.”

Making his professional debut in 2013, “Black Magic” quickly took over the regional Texas scene. Signing with Golden Boy, Mazion would quickly show his potential in the ring. His last fight was in January, beating Fernando Castaneda for the WBC-NABF Super-Welterweight Title. Mazion had 13 wins via knockout and had a streak of 11 wins via some form of knockout to start his career.

Mazion had been eyeing a bout with WBO Light-Middleweight Champion Patrick Teixeira. The two have exchanged words before, with Mazion stating Teixeira turned an offer down to face him.

Fellow Golden Boy teammate and friend Vergil Ortiz Jr., who is set to start Golden Boy’s return, ended up posting the following on Twitter:

“I can’t believe it, R.I.P Travell Mazion. For those who don’t know him or never met him, he was a very talented boxer and one of the coolest people I knew. Always enjoyed watching him fight. Love you bro, watch over us.”
