Boxing Trainer Offers Advice To Anthony Joshua Regarding Kubrat Pulev
Scouting an opponent can help when it comes to a future matchup. In order to get the fights he desires, Anthony Joshua has managed to get advice from an unlikely source.
Peter Fury, the father of Hughie Fury, discussed what it was like for his son to face off against Kubrat Pulev. Joshua is set to defend his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO Heavyweight Title’s against Pulev in a fight planned for November. Recently, Pulev’s team discussed Joshua’s weakness of unfamiliarity when it came to fights being held outside of the UK. Fury would end up breaking down Pulev much more methodically.
“Pulev is very cagey and he’ll come in top condition as well, and he’s really up for this fight,” Fury would state to Sky Sports. “He’s got a very good jab. He’s a very underestimated boxer is Pulev. He’s very awkward. You’ve got to break him down and AJ will have to take chances in this fight, because he’s not going to just simply be able to land that double jab and right hand on Pulev, no matter how sharp he is.”
A former IBF International Heavyweight Champion, Pulev (28-1) is on an eight-fight win streak. He last fought Rydell Booker in November, winning via unanimous decision. Back in October 2018, Pulev beat Hughie Fury via unanimous decision. Fury was cut above his eye in the second and Pulev would not stop going after it.
Joshua (23-1) last fought in December, beating Andy Ruiz Jr. in Saudi Arabia to regain his heavyweight titles. Ruiz took the titles from him back in June 2019 in what was considered an upset. Peter has offered Hughie’s services to spar with Joshua ahead of their bout, seeing how he has experience against Pulev. Due to the violent nature of “The Kobra”, who has 14 wins via knockout, Peter believes Joshua should be careful.
“He’s an overwhelming kind of guy. If he gets going, gets in a routine, then he can grind you down,” Fury went on to say. “It’s definitely not a fight for AJ to go on his back foot, because that will definitely suit Pulev down to a tee. It’s not easy to outbox Pulev.”
Hughie is the cousin of WBC and lineal Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury. Joshua and Fury have agreed in principle to fight one another in 2021 if Joshua can get past Pulev.
