Brazilian Commission Did Not Test Fighters For Coronavirus Prior To UFC Brasilia
The UFC’s return to Brasilia felt eerie, as no fans were inside the arena. Due to the coronavirus, a majority of events were postponed due to fear of exposure. The show went on for the UFC, however, as only the fighters and essential personal were inside the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium.
With the world looking to contain the virus, safety is the main concern. However, the Brazilian Athletic Commission did not test fighters for the coronavirus.
“What we did was follow teams and athletes closely, alongside the UFC, for possible symptoms, and so far no one has presented any,” CABMMA COO Cristiano Sampaio stated to MMA Fighting prior to the event. “There was no suspicion even at the weigh-ins, where fighters would be more weaken with the weight cut. The incubation period goes from five to 14 days, which could still result in a negative test.”
The only concern heading into fight night was Kevin Lee not making weight. As the event rolled on, however, fighters started to bleed and sweat all over the octagon. The main event saw Charles Oliveira submit Lee in the third round. It is unknown what the UFC will do now with those fighters and personnel. It appears that the commission will do everything it can after the fight to ensure everyone is healthy and safe.
“We’re taking every measure possible under the current scenario,” Sampaio went on to say.
Was this the right move by the commission?
