BREAKING: Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith Official

Boxing’s megastar, Canelo Alvarez, is back.

Mike Coppinger of The Athletic reports that a showdown between Canelo and Callum Smith is being finalized for December 19. Canelo is the WBA (Regular) Super-Middleweight Champion, while Smith holds the Super version of the title.

Here’s what Coppinger had to say about Canelo vs. Smith.

“SOURCES: Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith are finalizing a deal for a Dec. 19 super middleweight title fight on DAZN, likely in Texas. Alvarez will make the announcement on Instagram. Eddie Hearn will promote, bringing the sport’s biggest star back to DAZN.”

It was previously reported that Canelo vs. Smith would be a go. At the time, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn said that talks were ongoing but not official. Canelo later released a teaser video and it’s assumed that he will officially announce the fight with Smith.

Canelo hasn’t fought since November 2, 2019. He slept Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round to capture the WBO Light-Heavyweight Title. Canelo decided to move back down to the super-middleweight division, vacating the light-heavyweight gold in the process.

Smith is coming off a unanimous decision victory over John Ryder back in November 2019. This was “Mundo’s” second successful title defense. The victory improved his pro boxing record to 27-0.
