Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be stepping inside the ring with MMA legend Anderson Silva.
Last week, ESPN Knockout reported that a showdown between Chavez and the former UFC Middleweight Champion was in the works. As it turns out, that report ended up being correct. TMZ has followed up on this confirming that Chavez vs. Silva has been signed for June 19.
Silva had the following to say on the matchup.
“When I look back at my journey, I see that nothing has been in vain. I am extremely happy for the opportunity to test my boxing skills with Julio César Chávez Jr. I train continuously, always striving for resilience and to overcome obstacles. Fighting is my everlasting breath.”
“The Spider” has long expressed his desire to step inside the boxing ring. In fact, Silva was calling for a showdown with boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. and the feeling was mutual.
There was a time when Silva was the most dominant fighter in the UFC. He even held the record for the most successful consecutive UFC title defenses before it was broken by Demetrious Johnson. Silva still holds the record in the UFC’s middleweight division.
Silva has since fallen from grace. As they say, father time waits for no man. He has gone 1-7, 1 NC in his last nine outings. At the age of 45, many are wondering if SIlva has anything left in the tank but he’ll get a chance to prove the naysayers wrong.
Chavez was once the WBC Middleweight Champion. He had three successful title defenses but has gone 2-3 in his last five outings. He’ll be looking to build off his November TKO win over Jeyson Minda.
