Broner Earns Split Decision vs. Granados

It was a close, tight bout, but tonight in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, Adrien Broner managed to come away with a victory over Adrian Granados in a 10-round bout.

Broner was mostly on the defensive in the opening round, while Granados seemed to earn the round by applying the pressure. He attacked early with several combinations and landed hard shots early on. Both men showed their flaws in the second, as Broner resorted to a lot of holding — making some wonder if he would end up getting any point deductions like in the fight against Shawn Porter. Broner, however, was able to get through with counter-punch after counter-punch on Granados.

Broner seemed to show more signs of fight in him in the third round, as he busted up Granados’ nose and landed a hard uppercut, scoring with multiple shots throughout the round. Granados, however, came back in the last minute, getting Broner to the ropes before the two were separated by the refs. After an even round four, the fifth saw Granados land more quantity of shots, while Broner landed quality ones. Broner’s back was to the ropes once more, but he was able to sneak in a few body shots as the bell rang, signaling the halfway point.

After another round that could have gone either way, it seemed Broner was in a groove, yet not throwing as many shots as his opposition. That played true in the seventh, as Granados continuously used his footwork before attacking Broner with several punches, while Broner just tried to get more on the inside. Each fighter also had at least one big moment in the eighth, as Granados once again had Broner on the ropes, but Broner fought back hard with a flurry of punches in the final minute.

Broner resorted to more holding than normal in round nine, but Granados made him pay for it, hitting him with shot after shot before unleashing a flurry late in the round. In the last round, which some feel could have been the deciding round, Granados threw everything he had left in the tank during the first half, only for a late step on the gas pedal by Broner, who answered back to close out the fight.

Broner won the bout via split decision, with two judges giving him the win with scores of 97-93 and 96-94, while the remaining judge gave the fight to Granados 97-93.
