Brook: ‘I’ve Got A Lot To Prove’ In DeLuca Fight
Not looking to ride into the sunset just yet, Kell Brook is hoping to create magic once again.
Brook (38-2), the former IBF Welterweight Champion, is set to face Mark DeLuca on February 8 inside the FlyDSA Arena in his backyard of Sheffield, England. The 33-year-old still believes he has a lot to give to the sport, showing interest in title fights within other divisions. Not fighting since 2018, however, has brought doubt upon his skills. Brook is looking to prove everyone wrong.
“People are writing me off,” Brook stated to SkySports. “My last fight wasn’t fantastic. I’ve got a lot to prove. All those who think I’m past it? I’ll show them… It’s got to be spectacular. You’ve got to go away and think ‘he’s back better than ever.’ That’s what I want people to say.
It hasn’t been the easiest few years for Brook. Following a 36-fight win streak to start his career, Brook had two bouts against boxing’s elite. He lost to Gennady Golovkin via TKO and Errol Spence Jr. right after via KO. After taking about a year to rest, Brook beat Sergey Rabchenko via KO (March 2018) before beating Michael Zerafa via unanimous decision in December of that year.
While the time away has made people question his durability, Brook still has big dreams if he beats his opponent. While an Amir Khan match is always in play, Brook believes he has options.
“2020 I want to be two-time champion,” Brook continued. “I’ve never been as driven, I’ve never been as focused in my whole career as I am now, because I want to mix it with the best. If I could have my dream fight, it would be an Errol Spence rematch. I could do welterweight. For the right fight, I’ll do welterweight.”
Brook must first get past DeLuca (24-1), who is currently on a three-fight win streak. DeLuca believes this is his time to shine, and that this fight against a guy like Brook is the pinnacle of his career. While DeLuca has not sustained that much damage compared to Brook, he is not taking the veteran lightly.
A lot is on the line for Brook this Saturday on DAZN and Sky Sports. Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn believes this fight can help Brook turn it all around and go on to bigger and better things.
“If Brook looks sensational it can set up a fight with Khan,” Hearn went on to say. “Liam Smith also wants the fight with Brook, and that is a natural fight.”
