Brook-Spence Planned for Champ’s Hometown

IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook may have been lobbying for a British super-fight with Amir Khan, but he will likely face rising star Errol Spence Jr. Spence is the mandatory challenger to Brook’s IBF title, and promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that a purse bid is on the horizon.

Hearn told RingTV that a purse bid was planned for Feb. 7 to determine who will handle the promotion and location of a fight between Brook (36-1) and Spence (21-0).

The purse bid was pushed back, however, as the two teams are very close to agreeing on a deal for the fight.

According to Boxing Scene, Brook vs. Spence will likely take place at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, the hometown of British champ Brook.

In his last fight, the previously undefeated Brook moved up all the way to middleweight to take on top pound-for-pound star Gennady Golovkin. Brook gave GGG a much better fight than the boxing world had expected, but eventually succumbed to the larger, heavy-handed fighter. Golovkin broke Brook’s orbital in the early rounds, leading to his corner throwing in the towel before the welterweight took too much damage.

Brook put on a lot of size to take the fight with Golovkin, which is part of the reason Hearn wants him to move up from welterweight. He does admit, however, that the potential matchups at light-middleweight are few and far between.

“Who do you fight at 154? I’d love to see him fight Miguel Cotto. Otto is not going to fight Kell Brook.”

As for the potential super-fight between Brook and Khan, Hearn said that the fight won’t happen until Khan and his team are willing to negotiate a more fair deal.

“He keeps asking us to do things (to fight him),” Hearn said. “‘Go ahead and win a world title.’ So Kell went and won a world title. ‘Go ahead and have a big fight.’ So he went up to middleweight and had a big fight with Gennady Golovkin. Now he wants 70/30 on the split. It’s an insult.”
