Brook vs. Spence Set for May 20
In the end, no purse bid was necessary for Kell Brook’s welterweight title defensive against rising star Errol Spence Jr. The highly-anticipated boxing fight will take place on May 20 in Brook’s hometown of Sheffield, England.
Boxing Scene confirmed that the fight was set after getting word from the IBF’s championships chairman Lindsey Tucker.
A purse bid had originally been set for February 7, but it was pushed back so that Brook and Spence’s teams could reach an agreement on terms for the fight.
Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) is promoted by Eddie Hearn, who came to terms with Spence’s promoter Tom Brown. Hearn originally wanted Brook to vacate the title and move up to 154 lbs. due to Brook’s trouble making the welterweight limit, but Brook wanted to face Spence first.
Brook last fought in a middleweight fight against top pound-for-pound boxer Gennady Golovkin. The British welterweight champion had success early in the fight but his corner eventually threw in the towel due to Brook suffering a broken orbital bone.
Spence (21-0, 18 KOs) last fought in August, knocking out Leonard Bundu in the sixth round.
