Brook vs. Spence Signed for May 27
While the welterweight title fight between IBF champion Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr. was announced weeks ago, but there was still a holdup before the date and venue was confirmed. Now, the deal is apparently done, and the matchup of top welterweights will take place on May 27 at Brammall Lane in Sheffield.
Promoter Eddie Hearn told the Daily Mail that the fight was signed for that date and venue and both fighters were on board.
Brook (36-1, 25 KO), who gave Gennady Golovkin one of his toughest fights to date, has knocked out seven of his last eight opponents. Last fall he moved up all the way to middleweight to take on GGG. The fight was closer than expected in the early rounds, as Brook was able to land clean shots on Golovkin before suffering a broken orbital bone. His corner threw in the towel in the fifth round.
Spence (21-0, 18 KO) has knocked out eight straight and looked more or less unstoppable in the process. He passes the eye test with flying colors, but Brook is quite a different beast from the likes of Chris Algieri and Leonard Bundu.
