Brook’s Weight Cut A Growing Concern
Welterweight champ Kell Brook earned a lot of respect when he moved all the way up to middleweight to take on Gennady Golovkin. That decision may backfire however, as boxing experts are expressing concern in Brook’s ability to get back to the 147 lb. limit.
Boxing expert Johnny Nelson discussed the difficulties that Brook is facing by fluctuating his weight so much:
"The weight is the issue, it’s my worry. Kell is a big, strong unit so he’s having to squeeze down to welterweight. You have to diet, you need serious discipline, you need to be on point with it. He’s not a happy bunny when he has to get down to welterweight. Each time he does it, it gets harder and harder."
In Errol Spence, Brook has a young and hungry challenger looking to earn his first world championship. The fight will be one of Brook’s toughest defenses, and a strenuous weight cut could hamper the Brit if the fight goes into the later rounds.
While experts like Nelson are not doubting Brook’s professionalism and believe he will make the weight, the manner in which he gets down to 147 lbs. may end up being the deciding factor in Saturday’s highly anticipated clash.
"He will make the weight regardless, but it depends how he makes it," Nelson wrote. "Will he be strong? Spence Jr’s team are expecting this fight to hinge on how Kell makes the weight, and what he looks like."
