Cage Warriors’ Jones Ready To Join MMA’s Elite
When it comes to the history of Cage Warriors, the fighters that have come through the promotion have made it a legitimate point of entry. Alumni include Conor McGregor, Michael Bisping, Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Jack Hermansson. 24-year-old Mason Jones is looking to become a big name like some of these fighters.
“The Dragon” has a chance to accomplish that at Cage Warriors 113, when he faces Joe McColgan for the vacant Cage Warriors Lightweight Title.
“I remember Conor McGregor winning that title and other Welsh fighters like Jack Shore, Jack Marshman and Brett Johns winning Cage Warriors titles too,” Jones stated to MMA Fighting. “I’ve always wanted that gold, and I knew one day it was going to be mine. I just can’t wait to get it tomorrow night to show everyone I’m the best in the division.”
Making his professional debut in 2017, Jones (8-0) has fought seven times for Cage Warriors. He fought twice in 2019, beating Donovan Desmae in April and Aleksi Mantykivi in October, both via unanimous decision. Debuting as an amateur at the age of 15, the man from Wales has a goal to go from a prospect to a major player.
In his way is McColgan (6-2-1), who has not lost a fight since December 2018. “The SBG Hunter” is 2-0-1 in his last three fights, with a draw against Mehdi Ben Lakhdar between two wins. His last fight was a submission win against Robbie Scott back in November. The Irish fighter is someone Jones has been waiting to get his hands on.
“When I decided to get back into MMA, Joe McColgan was on my list – I wanted to fight the top fighters in the division and he was on the list,” Jones went on to say. “I really, really can’t wait to go in there and dismantle him. Joe is a dangerous striker, he’s got good Muay Thai, he’s got great leg kicks but I just think I’m better everywhere. My timing is better, my footwork is better and my striking is better – I really feel like I’m going to dismantle him.”
As the only major MMA promotion and sport having an event this weekend due to the coronavirus, Cage Warriors is looking to put on a show that nobody will ever forget. Jones will be looking to do the same.
