Caleb Plant Gives Assessment Of Canelo Alvarez’s Win Over Avni Yildirim
Caleb Plant has shared his take on Canelo Alvarez’s TKO victory over Avni Yildirim.
This past Saturday night, February 27, Canelo put his WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles on the line. Yildirim was the mandatory WBC Title challenger. Yildirim hadn’t fought since February 2019.
It was clear from the early going that Canelo was the aggressor, while Yildirim simply covered up. In the third round, Canelo dropped the challenger. While Yildirim made it back to his feet and lasted until the bell, his corner had seen enough and waved the fight off.
During an interview with BoxingScene.com, Plant, who holds the IBF gold, said he felt Canelo shared the ring with someone who wasn’t mentally prepared.
“Not to take anything away from Canelo, he went in and did what he had to do. He had someone in front of him who was just giving him too much respect, just going into the ring without that winner’s mentality.
“With Canelo you have to go in the ring with the mentality that ‘I’m here to win, no matter what.’ Again, Canelo did what he had to do.”
Canelo is expected to meet WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders on May 8. If the Mexican star emerges victorious, then he’ll likely go after Plant in an attempt to unify the 168-pound championships. Canelo has said his goal is to earn unification status at super-middleweight.
Plant is coming off a successful IBF Title defense over Caleb Truax. It was a unanimous decision victory for the champion.
