Both boxers are currently at different stages of their careers. Plant is the former IBF super middleweight champion, who has lost out in the biggest fights of his career against Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. The WBC middleweight champion Charlo, however, recently returned to beat Jose Benavidez Jr. after being out of the ring for more than two years with mental health struggles. Plant and Charlo did come face-to-face during an altercation after the Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford weigh-in.
Plant hit Charlo for allegedly disrespecting him and pulling his beard in front of his wife. That set up the narrative for a fight.
“Just trying to get that Charlo fight. That’s what we want next. I don’t need a tuneup going into that fight. It doesn’t matter if I’ve been off a little bit. I want that fight right next. I’m not hard to make a fight with, and I ain’t hard to find. It [Charlo’s fight] wasn’t nothing spectacular.
“He’s in there against a much smaller guy. He got his job done. He won. I’m glad he won. That’s what I wanted, for him to win, so we can make a fight happen. It’s not like I was super impressed or anything like that, but I’m glad he won…that’s the fight that needs to happen next,” Plant said
However, Charlo appeared reluctant to do so. Following his win over Benavidez Jr., Charlo took his time to troll Plant since he no longer had a belt. Instead, Charlo focused on securing bigger fights against Canelo or Benavidez. There are still questions over whether Charlo stays at 160. He is the current WBC middleweight champ, as his mandatory, Carlos Adames, waits for his title shot as a fight with Plant was not on his radar.
“Man, we ain’t worried about none of that. Like talk to me about something good. That s**t old. That s**t stale. We want something new. You know what I mean? Who got the belts? He don’t got no belt. He struggling right now.
“You know what I mean? I’m not worried about him. We still on top, we looking good. You know what I’m saying? We still going. They can’t wait for me to fight again. I can’t wait to fight again. As long as we keep it like that, we all right,” Charlo stated
