IBF Super-Middleweight Champion Caleb Plant wasn’t in awe of Canelo Alvarez’s performance against Callum Smith.
Alvarez took on Callum Smith for the WBA (Super), the vacant WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles. Canelo turned in a one-sided performance on his way to a unanimous decision victory. It marked the first defeat in the pro boxing career of Smith.
Plant appeared on The Ak & Barak Show and expressed his belief that Smith never gave Canelo a true fight (via BoxingScene.com).
“I wasn’t overly impressed. I didn’t really see him do something where I was like, ‘Wow! This is, you know, something I haven’t seen or new elements to his game.’ … And for the most part, too, I just felt like Callum went from rope to rope, from corner to corner. You know, you can call it commendable that he got in there and fought him. But at no point did he really fight Canelo. He got in there and the bell rang, and he stayed alive for 12 rounds. But I don’t feel like he ever really put it all out there and really went out on his shield.”
Plant has a title bout coming up himself. He’ll put his IBF gold on the line against Caleb Truax on January 30. It’ll be the third time Plant puts the IBF Title on the line.
Canelo has made his plans for 2021 clear. He wants to rule the roost at 168 pounds without debate. Standing in his way are Plant and Billy Joe Saunders, who holds the WBO Championship.
