Callum Smith Dismisses Rocky Fielding Comparisons Ahead Of Canelo Fight
Callum Smith has heard of the comparisons to Rocky Fielding and he isn’t buying the narrative.
Smith is set to defend his WBA (Super) and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles against Canelo Alvarez. The vacant WBC Championship will also be on the line. The title fight will take place on Saturday night, December 19. Canelo and Smith will share the ring inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. About 12,000 fans will be in attendance.
Both Smith and Canelo have TKO finishes over Fielding. Despite this, some are still comparing Smith and Fielding due to their size advantages over Canelo. Some feel Canelo has already proven he can have success over fighters who tower over him.
For Smith, however, he feels Canelo picked the “weakest option” to call himself a super-middleweight titleholder. Smith dismissed comparisons to Fielding (via BoxingScene.com).
“I think the two of us have done a similar job on him and people are reading into that. ‘Yeah, Rocky was tall, and look what happened to him [against Alvarez].’ But I think our fight showed I’m not Rocky Fielding. I’ve got the size Rocky’s got, but I’ve got a lot more ability to go with it. So, I think Canelo’s in for a tougher night than he was in New York a couple of years ago.”
Despite Smith believing Canelo handpicked Fielding in 2018, the world champion still gives Canelo credit for winning a title at light-heavyweight and accepting a bout with him. Smith says, “you can’t really knock him now.”
