Cameron: ‘I’ve Got The Tools To Beat’ Taylor
While she is the the mandatory challenger for WBC Super-Lightweight Champion Jessica McCaskill, Chantelle Cameron isn’t looking past other opportunities. That includes fighting someone she looks up to.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Cameron (12-0) discussed the idea of facing Katie Taylor. The 33-year-old Taylor is the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring Lightweight Champion, as well as the WBO Junior-Welterweight Champion. Cameron wants to face one of the top stars today, and believes she can provide a challenge to the 33-year-old.
“I’m a massive fan of Katie, she is a legend and what she’s done for women’s boxing is incredible. But I’ve got the tools to beat her,” Cameron stated. “It’s strange in the sense that she has inspired every female boxer in the world, including me. But I’ve earned my place. I’ve earned my spot.”
Cameron first fought professionally in 2017. Signed by MTK Global, Cameron fought four times in 2019, winning all four. After beating Anisha Basheel for the WBC Silver Lightweight Title, Cameron beat Anahi Ester Sanchez back in November via unanimous decision. She has faced Taylor before in the amateurs, with Taylor coming out on top.
Currently, Taylor (15-0) is set to face off against Amanda Serrano at some point this year. If she were to win that bout, she is in line to face Cecilia Braekhus. Another fight on the table is a Delfine Persoon rematch. Taylor beat Persoon inside Madison Square Garden via majority decision in an entertaining bout that some are calling controversial. While Cameron is excited for those bouts, she is ready to face Taylor soon, and not when it’s too late.
“I want to box Katie in her prime, not when it’s starting to take its toll and people say she’s got too many miles on the clock,” Cameron went on to say. “She’s in her prime now. I want to fight her at her best. Our styles would make a great fight. But my style? She doesn’t want any of that.”
Will Cameron end up getting the fight she desires?
