Canelo Able To Keep Both WBA Belts

Citing precedent, the WBA has announced that Canelo Alvarez will remain recognized as their middleweight and super middleweight champion.

Alvarez would gain the WBA middleweight title with his September 2018 decision win over Gennady Golovkin, and gained the “regular” version of their super middleweight title with a third round TKO of Rocky Fielding.

In a report from Boxing Scene, the WBA confirmed that Alvarez would be able to maintain his hold of both titles due to Floyd Mayweather being able to the same with their welterweight and junior middleweight titles.

Mayweather would be recognized as their junior middleweight champion until his 2015 retirement, when hed’ not fought at that weight class since 2013.
