Canelo Alvarez: Callum Smith Is The Best At 168 Pounds

Canelo Alvarez thinks Callum Smith is the gold standard at super-middleweight.

On Saturday night, December 19, Alvarez will challenge Smith for the WBA (Super) gold. The vacant WBC Title will also be on the line. This big title showdown will close 2020 for DAZN in terms of boxing events. It’ll be held inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

During a virtual media conference, Canelo told reporters that he feels Smith has earned the right to be viewed as the best super-middleweight going into their title bout (via

“To me, he’s the best at 168. He’s listed at #1 in the world rankings at 168 pounds. So yes, I agree that he’s the best. That motivates me a lot. It motivates me a lot because it’s a big challenge for me. It’s me continuing to make history in boxing, which is ultimately what I want and what I love to do.”

Canelo and Smith haven’t competed since November 2019. Canelo captured the WBO Light-Heavyweight Title by knocking out Sergey Kovalev. Smith took a unanimous decision victory over John Ryder to retain the WBA (Super) gold.

This will be Canelo’s first fight since his split from Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN. Canelo vs. Smith will air on DAZN as the bout is being promoted by Matchroom Boxing. Fight fans also have the option of catching the event on PPV.

Canelo brings with him a record of 53-1-2 with 36 of those victories coming by way of knockout. Smith is a perfect 27-0 in his pro boxing career with 19 knockout wins to his credit.
