Canelo Alvarez Finalizes Two-Fight Deal With Dmitry Bivol, Gennadiy Golovkin

Canelo Alvarez has finalized his next fight.

This time, it’ll be against Dmitry Bivol for a May 7 fight for Bivol’s light heavyweight title, ESPN reported Friday afternoon. It will reportedly be a DAZN pay-per-view event.

While Alvarez is the undisputed super middleweight champion, he will challenge Bivol at 175 pounds. He’s returning to the division after a sole fight in November 2019 where he scored a brutal knockout of Sergey Kovalev in Round 11.

Assuming Alvarez defeats Bivol and Gennadiy Golovkin defeats upcoming opponent Ryota Murata, the next fight for Alvarez will be a trilogy fight against GGG, as according to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing deal.

The other deal Alvarez was offered was from PBC and included a one-fight deal to defend his titles against top contender Jermall Charlo on May 7. Later, that offer was extended with a fight in September with another top contender, David Benavidez.

But Alvarez reportedly declined that package.

If the champion sticks with Hearn’s offer, he’s guaranteed more than $85 million.

Bivol is one of the boxers that fans have been calling Alvarez to meet in the ring. Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) has donned the WBA title since 2017. He most recently defeated Umar Salamov via unanimous decision.

When Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) first met Alvarez, it was in 2017 and that matchup ended in a controversial draw. They met again in 2018 where Golovkin suffered a majority decision loss.

Meanwhile, Alvarez most recently became the first undisputed super middleweight champion after he claimed the final belt from Caleb Plant via technical knockout.

The Mexican superstar later announced a move to cruiserweight to take on WBC champion Ilunga Makabu, but Makabu had to take on a mandatory defense, which he ended up winning. Makabu called out Alvarez and made it clear he was ready for a fight, but those plans seem to now be halted.

The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is likely to house the Canelo-Bivol fight, but it has yet to be finalized. There will be a press conference Wednesday to begin the fight promotion, Boxing Scene reported.
