Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin Hit New York Press Conference For September Trilogy Fight
Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin hit New York City on Monday, which was the final stop of their press tour for their upcoming trilogy fight.
Alvarez and Golovkin met for the last time face-to-face until fight week, which will happen the week of September 12 for their trilogy and undisputed super middleweight title fight that’s scheduled for September 17 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The two met for the first time in four years on Friday in Los Angeles. That was when Alvarez walked away with a majority decision win and held just three of the four major belts.
Now Golovkin will have a shot at becoming the second undisputed super middleweight champion – the first being Alvarez when he snatched the IBF title from Caleb Plant in November.
But some fans’ faith in Alvarez has been shaken after he suffered the second loss of his pro career to Dmitry Bivol on May 7. The fight was a two-class jump for Alvarez at light heavyweight and an attempt to capture Bivol’s WBA title.
When Alvarez and GGG met in Los Angeles, the Mexican boxer had a few words to say about his opponent.
“He pretends to be a nice guy but he’s not, he’s an a–hole. That’s what he is. He pretends to be a nice guy and, ‘Oh, yes, I’m just looking for the fight, I’m happy.’ And then in other places he talks a lot of sh–t. It is what it is. Just be a man and say what you say,” Alvarez said.
“And I will do it. For sure. (A knockout) is the only way I want to finish this fight.”
