Canelo Alvarez Hopes To Work With Eddie Hearn Long-Term
Canelo Alvarez and Eddie Hearn may be in for a long-term business partnership.
Canelo is the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Champion. He is in the midst of a two-fight deal with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. That deal will end after Canelo takes on WBO titleholder Billy Joe Saunders. Even so, this may not be the last time fight fans see Canelo and Hearn working together.
During an interview with TV Azteca, Canelo revealed that he’s looking to continue having Hearn by his side beyond the Saunders fight (via Supreme Boxing).
“The idea is to continue to work with Eddie Hearn for a very long time. He is the best promoter in the world, by far. I love working with him because he is a promoter who cares about even the little details, which makes everything much better. He never has a problem with his fighters and he listens to the wishes of his fighters. It is great to finally work with this type of promoter.
“It is true we signed a two-fight deal, for February and May (vs. Yildirim and Saunders). I like this way of working, and Eddie is happy to continue with this too (to work on one/two-fight deals). We have already asked him to lead the negotiations for our September fight, possibly against (Caleb) Plant, and he has started the talks with their team. We have discussed the idea of fighting in December too and in May 2022. Yes, the idea we (Canelo and Eddy Reynoso) have is to keep working with Eddie for my fights and also with the other fighters on our team (in Canelo Team – such as Julio Cesar Martinez, Hiroto Kyoguchi) for many years.”
Canelo had competed under the Matchroom banner back in December when he defeated Callum Smith. That bout wasn’t a part of the two-fight agreement. Then at the end of February, he competed in another Matchroom card, stopping Avni Yildirim via TKO in the third round.
