Canelo Alvarez Impressed By Ryan Garcia’s KO Over Luke Campbell

Canelo Alvarez was in attendance for Ryan Garcia’s knockout win over Luke Campbell and he liked what he saw.

Garcia went one-on-one with Campbell inside the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on January 2. This bout was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Matchroom Boxing. The interim WBC Lightweight Championship was on the line.

Garcia’s plan to put the pressure on Campbell was clear from the opening bell but he ran into trouble in the second stanza. “KingRy” ate a flush punch to the jaw that dropped him. Despite the knockdown, Garcia remained focused and gave Campbell problems with his pace.

In the seventh round, Garcia landed a body shot that sent Campbell to the canvas. Campbell couldn’t get up before the 10-count and Garcia remained unbeaten and added interim gold to his mantle.

Canelo spoke to Little Giant Boxing after the fight and said he was impressed by Garcia’s ability to shine in the face of adversity (via BoxingScene.com).

“Ryan Garcia showed that he has balls. That is one of the most important things in boxing. And this fight is going to serve him well. Luke Campbell is a good fighter, left-handed, difficult. This fight is going to serve him more than all the ones he has fought.

“The key was to be patient, to be calm, but he sped things up. This fight will serve as an experience for him. In the end, fights like this are the ones that give you the experience to go forward to even bigger fights and everything like this will serve him well.”

The question now is, what’s next for Garcia? Following his win over Campbell, “KingRy” said he’s targeting WBA (Regular) Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis. If he can’t get Davis, then Garcia wants a crack at WBC titleholder Devin Haney.
