Canelo Alvarez Questions Why Nate Robinson Was Given Boxing License To Fight Jake Paul
Canelo Alvarez isn’t thrilled with the California State Athletic Commission for allowing Nate Robinson to box Jake Paul.
Back in November, Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. headlined a boxing card promoted by Triller. The bout between Tyson and Jones was an exhibition match. The rest of the card featured professional fights, including Paul vs. Robinson. Paul is a YouTube star, who had one pro bout prior, while Robinson is a former NBA player who had no prior boxing matches.
In the end, Paul knocked Robinson out cold in the second round. The Internet meme’d it up at Robinson’s expense but Canelo didn’t think this was a laughing matter.
During a recent edition of Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, Canelo expressed his dismay over the fact that Robinson received a boxing license without prior experience (h/t Middle Easy).
“People can do whatever they want in this life. I’m okay with that. People can live the way they want to. I can’t control what they do but when they gave the basketball player [Nate Robinson] the license to box and [Paul] almost killed him.
“This isn’t a game. You can die in there, you can leave your life in there. That’s the only problem, but people can do whatever they want.”
Paul has expressed his issues with Canelo. The Internet sensation was none too pleased with Canelo for throwing out a couple of fans who were promoting his April 17 fight with Ben Askren during a post-fight interview. Paul went as far as to call Canelo an “old hater” in a social media video (via TMZ Sports).
“Canelo, what’s your problem, bro?! Why you hate me so much?! Canelo’s mad. He has this thing against me. Said I’m bad for the sport. I’m disrespecting it, which doesn’t make sense at all. I’m actually just bringing more eyeballs, more awareness to the sport of boxing. But since Canelo, you wanted to start this beef, let’s do it!
“Why not fight Caleb Plant? David Benavidez? BooBoo Andrade? You’re ducking them. You’re ducking them, Canelo! You’re an old hater, that’s what you are.”
