Canelo Alvarez might not go for Dmitry Bivol in September after all.
According to reports, Alvarez “strongly hinted” at pursuing the trilogy fight with Gennadiy Golovkin first on September 17 – instead of an immediate rematch with Bivol — which was part of the Matchroom Boxing deal he had signed.
Against Golovkin, the undisputed super middleweight champion would defend his WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO world titles.
“Surely yes,” Alvarez said when asked about facing GGG, during a press conference to promote a new golf venture in Mexico.
“We already had that contract, that deal, so we have to continue what we started.
“And I think they are the two most important fights in boxing – the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol because unfortunately we lost, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to try again.
Critics have begun to question Alvarez after looking inferior to Bivol, the WBA light heavyweight champion, on May 7. Alvarez lost by unanimous decision.
But there was a time where a majority of boxing fans didn’t think twice about considering Alvarez as the pound-for-pound boxer.
Alvarez first fought Golovkin in September 2017, but that ended in a split draw.
Almost exactly one year later, the two met again, but this time Alvarez would walk away with the majority decision win.
Alvarez’s loss to Bivol snapped his seven-fight winning streak.
“The important thing here is perseverance and we are going to do it again…,” Alvarez added.
“What is certain is that we will return in September and these days, today, tomorrow, the day after, we are going to announce the fight, only we have to wait a little.”
