Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith Talks Underway
Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith could become a reality.
Alvarez is the hottest free agent in boxing. The Mexican star has split from DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions after a brief legal battle. Alvarez had alleged breach of contract and was seeking $280 million along with the ability to break free of his contracts. Canelo ended up at least getting the latter.
Many have wondered what’s next for Alvarez. There were rumblings of a bout with Caleb Plant but that idea appears to be dead in the water. Instead, the focus now turns to Smith.
ESPN MX reported that Alvarez and Smith “reached an agreement” to fight on either December 18th or 19th. Another report claims that while talks are underway, an agreement has not been reached.
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn spoke to BoxingScene.com and gave a status update on Canelo vs. Smith.
“Talks are ongoing with Team Canelo and it would be an honor to reach an agreement on this tremendous fight with Callum Smith.”
Another source added the following.
“Nothing is done, there’s a lot on the table. No deal is done.”
Alvarez hasn’t competed since November 2, 2019. He defeated Sergey Kovalev via 11th-round knockout to capture the WBO Light-Heavyweight Championship. Canelo vacated the title as he will be moving back down in weight.
As for Smith, his last fight was back on November 23, 2019. He successfully retained the WBA (Super) Super-Middleweight Title against John Ryder via unanimous decision. Canelo holds the WBA (Regular) Title at Super-Middleweight.
Up to this point, Smith is undefeated with a record of 27-0 with 19 of those wins coming by way of knockout. Despite being the same age as Smith, 30, Canelo has more knockouts than Smith has victories. Canelo has a record of 53-1-2 with 36 of those wins coming by way of knockout.
