Canelo Alvarez Vs. Jermell Charlo Preliminary And Undercard Live Results, Recaps: Lubin Beats Ramos Jr. Via A ‘Controversial’ Unanimous Decision

Canelo Alvarez puts his super middleweight titles on the line against Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023, in a battle of two undisputed champions.

Alvarez will defend his undisputed titles for the third time against Charlo, who jumps up two weight classes in an attempt to become undisputed in a second weight class. A win for Canelo would silence doubts about him declining following his performances against Dmitry Bivol, GGG and John Ryder. Meanwhile, a win for Charlo would put the boxer down in the conversation of being one of the best of all time.

In chief support, Jesus Ramos Jr. and Erickson Lubin will face off in a super welterweight clash. The former is undefeated, while Lubin’s losses have only come at the hands of Jermell Charlo and Sebastian Fundora.

Live Results: Main Card

Jesus Ramos Jr. vs Erickson Lubin – WBA eliminator, junior middleweight

Lubin began with the jab, which fell short as Ramos’ defensive skills negated any threat. Both boxers showed good defensive skills, with very little landing. However, Ramos did connect to Lubin’s body with a left hand and a jab. Despite Ramos’ efforts, Lubin was the more active fighter in the first.

Lubin took the initiative in the second with a sharp jab to the body, which Ramos swiftly countered. The latter had a solid round, though, with consecutive hooks to the body. Ramos continued to apply the pressure, closing the distance and peppering the body. Lubin aimed to keep the distance with his jab, but it was more of the same in the third as Ramos targeted the midsection with his right hand.

Ramos backed his opponent up in the fourth with a left hand and an uppercut. While Lubin did get off the ropes, the fighter was losing rounds as Romas dominated the first half of the fight. As the fight entered the halfway stage, Lubin needed to increase the pace.

Lubin had a better sixth round as his hand speed resulted in a right to the body as he jabbed and pivoted out of range. Lubin continued on the offensive with jabs to the head. The same followed in the seventh, with Lubin showing a resurgence. However, Ramos ended the seventh strong. The boxer landed to the body with a hook as he pushed Lubin on the ropes once again.

As the fight entered the championship rounds, Lubin had it all to do. Lubin’s corner urged him to let his hands go. Despite this being the case, Lubin was given the win in a controversial decision: 115-113, 116-12, 117-111. The crowd responded with numerous jeers as the decision did not go down well.

Yordenis Ugas vs. Mario Barrios – WBC interim welterweight title

Barrios began by utilizing his jab, which Ugas managed to block before countering with a left hook. The Cuban returned fire with his own couple of jabs and a right to the body. Barrios did land a counter, but Ugas did enough to take the first.

Both men landed in the second as Ugas got through with a couple of body shots, while Barrios landed during a counter. Then an overhand right landed flush for Ugas, only for his hard work to be undone at the end of the round. A quick jab caught Ugas unaware as he went down, much to his surprise, as Barrios took a 10-8 round.

Ugas advanced with his jab and caught Barrios with a powerful hook in the third. As he sensed an opening, Ugas stalked his opponent. Barrios did respond with shots to the body, only to be tagged by a right hand in return. A huge left hook hit Barrios’ body in a clear round for Ugas.

Barrios continued to target Ugas’ body to push back his opponent. As the fight entered the halfway stage, Barrios landed with more jabs to the body. A right hand landed clean on Ugas’ chin. The Cuban finished the sixth round stronger with a right of his own, only to connect with Barrios after the bell, which earned him a warning.

The eighth round arrived, with both men trading as the pace increased. Barrios landed a combination as Ugas’ eye showed clear swelling. Barrios’ pressure began to tell as the referee checked Ugas’ eye before the beginning of the 10th, 11th and last round, but the fight continued.

Barrios’ late flurry was telling. He caught the Cuban once again as the latter staggered back while Ugas was warned for hitting below the belt. And the pressure told as Barrios landed a big left hook that sent Ugas to the canvas in the 12th.

The latter’s mouth piece fell out, which gave him some respite. However, the Cuban had a point deducted for spitting out his mouthpiece as Barrios won on the cards: 117-108, 118-107 and 118-107.
