Canelo Alvarez Wants To Fight At Least Three Times In 2021
Canelo Alvarez wants to stay active in 2021.
Alvarez is the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Champion. The Mexican star is set to put his gold on the line against Avni Yildirim on February 27. The action will be held inside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. If Canelo handles business later this month, then he’s expected to share the ring with WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders in May.
Speaking with BoxingScene.com, Canelo said his goal is to stay busy in 2021.
“I truly wanna fight a minimum of three times this year but I’m always open for one more. Of course, the possibility exists for that. I’ve thought about it. Don’t believe I haven’t. I love being active.
“I really like being active. I like to train, and I love to be in the gym.”
Canelo has made it clear that he’s aiming to become the undisputed champion at 168 pounds. To achieve this, he must obtain the WBO and IBF Titles. The IBF gold is currently held by Caleb Plant, who is fresh off a successful title defense against Caleb Truax.
In his most recent bout back in December 2020, Canelo captured the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Titles by defeating Callum Smith. It was a one-sided showing for Canelo, who earned the unanimous decision victory.
Canelo is currently in a two-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing. If he defeats Yildirim and Saunders this year, he could end up signing a short-term deal with PBC to fight Plant.
Of course, that is just speculation at this time.
