Canelo Alvarez’s Next Fight Will Be In Mexico On May 6th

Canelo Alvarez has confirmed that his undisputed super middleweight title defense will be held on May 6th in Jalisco, Mexico.

Despite Canelo, a four-time world champion, not revealing his opponent’s name, it is expected to be John Ryder, the WBO mandatory at 168, promoted by Eddie Hearn.

This will be Canelo’s first fight in Mexico since his 12th-round knockout of Ryan Rhodes in June 2011 at Arena VFG in Guadalajara.

ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez had this to say: “Saul Canelo Alvarez confirmed his first fight in Jalisco in 12 years. It is known that the British John Ryder is already advanced in the talks. The favorite venue for Canelo Alvarez’s return home is the Jalisco Stadium.”

Interestingly, Canelo’s comeback to Mexico will not be against David Benavidez, someone who the fans had been calling for in what would be a blockbuster Mexican clash.

Canelo’s recent bout against the aging Gennadiy Golovkin was widely seen as a tune-up fight after having lost to Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight. But one thing for sure is that Canelo will give it his all.
