Canelo Alvarez’s Trainer Likes Matchups With Spence & Charlo
Canelo Alvarez’s trainer is a fan of matchups with Errol Spence Jr. and Jermall Charlo.
Canelo continues to weigh his options after being freed from his contracts with DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions. Boxing’s biggest star is a free agent and reports have linked him to a December showdown with WBA (Super) Super-Middleweight Champion Callum Smith. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn confirmed talks are underway but nothing has been made official.
Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, spoke to Little Giant Boxing and he expressed interest in his fighter sharing the ring with Spence and Charlo (via Bad Left Hook).
“Spence vs Canelo would be interesting, the only difficult thing is the weight class. Canelo is now fighting at 168 pounds, Spence would have to move up. It’s a fight that could be made, but we have to work toward it, so fighters like Spence can start to move up to 160 pounds and Canelo (back down) to 160 pounds. It’s almost been a year since Canelo has fought, we can’t just move down to 160 pounds, we have to work toward that weight.
“Canelo vs Charlo is a good fight. Charlo has a lot of qualities, he’s spectacular, tall for the division, strong, and has good boxing skills. Sooner or later those fights have to happen, we just have to stay in the gym and keep working.”
Canelo’s last outing took place back on November 2, 2019. He did battle with Sergey Kovalev for the WBO Light-Heavyweight Title. Canelo put Kovalev to sleep to capture the gold. He’s since vacated the title in an effort to return to the super-middleweight division.
Spence is currently busy with the welterweight division. He is the WBC and IBF Welterweight Champion. He will defend those titles against Danny Garcia on December 5. The title fight will air on PBC on FOX PPV and on FIGHT SPORTS in over 30 countries.
Charlo is the reigning WBC Super-Middleweight Champion. He successfully defended his gold against Sergiy Derevyanchenko via unanimous decision back in September.
