Canelo beats Scull In A Snoozefest

Canelo Alvarez beat William Scull to become undisputed at 168 for the second time in a fight that was devoid of much action.

Canelo won a wide unanimous decision, 115-113, 116-112, and 119-109, but Scull’s failure to engage meant it was a dour spectacle. Canelo and Scull were cautious early on. Canelo tried to get on the inside to land while Scull stayed on the outside, using his jab to keep Alvarez at bay. Canelo found success with right hand in round two. Scull did the same in the third but did not follow it up with sustained pressure.

Canelo worked the body in the sixth and eighth, with hooks to the midsection. However, Scull avoided exchanging as he was happy to make it to the final bell. The Compubox numbers showed the lack of action. Canelo connected with 56 out of 152 punches, while Scull landed only 55 from 293. Canelo had 48 power punches compared to Scull’s 28.

Scull only beat Canelo in the jab department with 29 compared to Canelo’s 8. Canelo’s win sets up the Terence Crawford fight, as the two men faced off in the ring. Canelo expressed his annoyance at Scull’s reluctance to fight, but his main focus now is to beat Crawford on September 12.

“That’s why I don’t like to fight those kinds of guys, they just come to survive. September [against Crawford] will be another kind of fight. For me, [Scull] was a boring fight… I hate those kinds of fights. He’s [Crawford] a great fighter and I look forward to sharing the ring with these kinds of fighters,” Canelo said
