Canelo Begins His Training Camp

Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) confirmed that training camp has begun for his return on September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Canelo’s return will be part of a “Mexico Against the World” card, marking the inaugural card for the newly formed Canelo Promotions. Following a unanimous decision defeat to Terence Crawford in September 2025 that cost him his undisputed super middleweight title and subsequent elbow surgery, Canelo wants a reigning world champion. With Crawford now retired, the super middleweight belts have scattered.

Christian Mbilli, who was elevated to full WBC Super Middleweight Champion earlier this year, could be an option. While Mbilli is a target, his schedule is complicated by a potential mandatory rematch with Lester Martinez. Canelo’s team is closely monitoring the WBO landscape. On May 23, Hamzah Sheeraz will face Alem Begic for the vacant WBO Super Middleweight Championship. The winner would become a viable opponent for Canelo.
